Our story begins with a father, telling his son the legend of the past, hoping that the facts would give him a better clue as to where he should stand in this war...
"... The she-wolf was desperate! She had been in the dungeon for nearly a whole moon, now. She could tell by counting the number of times moonlight was cast into her cell. By now, the she-wolf and her companion - you remember her companion, right son? No.. oh, well it has been a while since I've explained this to you. You see, the castle she was kept in was full of living creatures, spies and thieves. Of course, Javon knew nothing of this because these creatures were small, minuscule - would you bother with a few rats eating your crumbs? Well, it just so happened one of the rats living in the dungeon had befriended our she-wolf, and all the while they had been planning her escape. The rat knew where the keys to the dungeon were kept, and it wasn't long before a sleeping guard provided the duo the perfect opportunity at an escape. During her 30 nights stuffed away in the cell, the shewolf's company had already scouted ahead and found the quickest and least susceptible way out of the dungeon and eventually, the castle. What he hadn't planned on, however, was Javon, taking his rounds around the castle.
Javon was furious when he found his prisoner had escaped, and was on her in an instant. Instead of killing her, as she expected, he offed with her rat friend and took her back to the dungeons. This time, she was put in a containment that had no cracks or windows for her to count the days, and the only thing that kept her sane was the fact that a guard would come in every once in a while to feed her. Of course, what Javon didn't realize was that this witch was more than capable of her abilities even without proper utensils - she had long ago trained her mind to send her spirit through space and time, sometimes even miles away from where she was. This way, she could communicate with another wolf if she was in danger. And so, wolves all around Kroat have been telling others of dreams where an old and tattered she-wolf visits them, pleading for help from the furious Javon in the land beyond the pass."
"Father, aren't we supposed to pay our respects to Javon with the Resda?"
"Yes, yes, everyone is told to uphold the food tax, son, although it is true that those who have seen this old she-wolf refuse to uphold the Resda. They are the Believers, and fight to free her, even if she is not real."
"Father, what did she ever do to deserve being locked away for an eternity?"
"You see, son, the she-wolf has told her story to the many wolves she visits in dreams, and one of the most resounding one is that she used to be the King's adviser. It is told that as a wiccan, she had the powers to see and tell prophecies, which is why the King found such a fancy in her. She could keep him safer than any of his guards could, because she could see an event before it even began. One day, she was telling the King of a prophecy, but for some reason she misinterpreted it, and almost cost the King his life in a horrible hunting accident. Do you remember that story of King Javon chasing the moose by himself? Good boy, you learn quickly. Anyways, he found her to be a traitor and locked her away, never to be seen by anyone"
"And where do you stand, Father?"
"I... I've seen her, son. She sent me a dream of her, imprisoned in the dank towers of Javon's castle. She is guarded day and night and she tells me she is only kept alive for the sake of the King's immortality. I believe it, son. I know she is alive. But you must not tell anyone, for they will call me a fool. They will banish your senile old father and ridicule his existence. This will be our little secret, you understand?"
"Yes, Father. But why do people hate these... Believers so much?"
"They go against the King. Loyalists are molded strictly for his army. Even average citizens pay their respects to the King, oblivious to his cruelty. It is his network of spies and insiders that spread the stories of his generosity and kindness. You must be careful where you walk, what you say, how you walk and how you say things. Watch everything and everyone. Do not be afraid to be cautious, for it may save you your life."
"Thank you Father, I trust in your wisdom."
